Is losing a few more pounds on your pre-summer to do list? You are not alone, and there is hope!

One of the most effective ways to successfully lose weight is to understand where weight gain comes from so you can stop and even reverse the cycle. This also helps you keep the weight off once you lose it. We can’t say that these are the causes of everyone’s weight gain, but for many of us, the struggles are common and it helps us to know we are not alone.

Here are 3 common causes of weight gain, and 3 helpful solutions to stop the cycle

1. Toxicity - toxins build up in the liver and in fat cells, and cause the metabolism to slow down. This causes weight gain and makes weight loss almost impossible. If you have stopped eating carbs, work out quite a bit and still are having trouble losing weight, this  could easily be the problem. Sometimes a little bit of natural thyroid supplementation can be helpful, but if you are also already doing that, then toxicity is a likely culprit.

Solution:  Lower exposure to toxins and start to detox.

Common toxins that you CAN avoid are:

Glade Plug-in Air Fresheners

Avoid by using a natural replacement. For a natural air freshener, use a spray bottle and fill ¾ full of fresh water, and then add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Just shake the bottle before spraying to help the oils disburse.

Dry Cleaner Chemicals

Avoid by using a dry cleaners that only uses natural cleaning supplies.

Plastics

Avoid by only cooking with glass or metal dishes, never use plastic.

Fluoride in Water

Avoid by using filtered water.

Petroleum Products

Avoid by using only natural skin care products like Andalou, or the other skin care products carried by Hotze Vitamins.

Over the counter pain medicines like acetaminophen or ibuprofen

Avoid by taking 200mg Magnesium Glycinate for a tension headache, or take Joint Comfort for achy joints.

Pesticides

Avoid by only purchasing organic produce.

Chemicals or Pesticides in Coffee

Avoid by switching to organic coffee.

Chemicals, Dyes or Fillers in Cheap Vitamins

Take Dr. Hotze’s Energy Formula Multi-Vitamin.

2. Eating too many carbs cause weight gain. You don’t need as many carbs as the food pyramid suggests. Eating very low carbs, like on a keto diet, is actually a very effective way to lose weight. Fasting 1-2 days per week, or intermittent fasting (not eating after 7 pm) can be helpful as well. The main idea is to drastically lower sugar intake, especially near sleeping times. This helps the body repair and renew itself. Sugar and carbs interfere with hormone regulation which can slow down metabolism and cause you to not sleep well. This causes you to wake up not feeling rested, and you may even feel edgy or fatigued. This makes it extra hard to resist carbs the next day…so the cycle starts again. The best way to stop the cycle is to think ahead on what you will eat and drink. PLAN to drink more water and eat a high protein, healthy snack like a protein bar.

Solution: Only eat 20-30 grams of carbs per day. It’s perfect for weight loss, and you can get these carbs from vegetables, beans and a little bit of fruit. Excessive carbs turn to fat. If you need more guidance, and an eating plan that supports this type of eating, try the 28-Day Slim Down program. It comes with everything you need!

3. Stress - Stress causes your adrenal glands to secrete stress hormones. Too much stress signals the release of sugar into the blood which ultimately can cause fat deposits around the mid section. Physiologically, this is a survival mechanism. Your body is storing fat for quick energy in a time of starvation or immediate danger (so that you can run!).  You may only be stressed about traffic, but your body processes the stress response the same in traffic as it would for running from a wild animal.

Solution: Natural stress relief options include deep breathing, yoga, exercise, and sufficient sleep. Make sure you are scheduling time for YOU every day. Yoga is a great way to reconnect with yourself and help mend mind and body. It also helps with balance and burns calories. Deep breathing can help carry oxygen where it’s needed to feel more energized and think more clearly. When we are stressed, we sometimes don’t breath in deep enough, so you may have to consciously take a few deep breaths when in a stressful situation. Prayer also relieves stress, especially when we approach God with gratitude for all of the blessings in our life. Gratitude replaces anxiety. Being able to process and reduce stress in life helps keep us emotionally anchored. This is beneficial, because you won’t be as likely to use food for stress relief.

Making changes in our daily lives requires a LOT of motivation, which is often fueled by good information. We hope these solutions to weight gain can help you lose weight and keep it off in the future.

We thought you may be wondering about some of the more common eating plans on the market today, and how they check out with the nutritionist. Here is a list and our thoughts about them.***

Ketogenic dieting: This is a lot like Yeast-Free eating but it’s high fat.

We give it two thumbs up as long as you focus on healthy, organic fats. Also, eventually your body needs a break, so ask your doctor how long they recommend for you to stay on the eating plan. You may discover that one month on a keto-type diet with 2-3 days off is a good balance if you are trying to lose weight, or 5 days on, 2 days off if you are just trying to keep the weight off.

Whole 30: This is also a lot like the Yeast-Free Diet but focuses on organic, pure, whole foods.

We also give this two thumbs up. It’s intense because if you cheat you have to start over! We like the intensity, and our guests have seen good results. Be careful though. Whole 30 isn’t as strict on carbs, so you may or may not lose weight.

Gluten-Free: Avoiding all foods containing gluten.

Thumbs down, kind of. We agree with eating gluten free, but it’s not a weight loss plan, and not always healthier in general. If you eat all of the carby “gluten free” foods you will gain weight and not lose it. You may also have blood sugar issues and low energy. It’s best to pick one of the eating plans that focuses on high protein and low carb.

Vegan: Only eating plant based foods.

Thumbs down, kind of. We agree with doing a 30 days raw vegan plan to lower inflammation after a concerning heart scan, but long term it’s not ideal. It’s a challenge to get all of your protein, healthy fats, B12 and iron when you aren’t eating meat. Disclaimer: we only recommend organic meats and grass fed beef, free range chicken and wild caught fish. Dairy products should also be organic.

****The best eating plan for weight loss is outlined in the guidebook that comes with the 28-Day Slim Down kit. It’s mainly the Optimal Eating Plan (Yeast-Free) with a focus on supplements and protein shakes. We’ve seen dozens of our customers coming back for another 28 days, letting us know that they finally saw results. It really works!
