The benefits of daily exercise are never-ending and well-known. We know this. However, the benefits of stretching are far less popular but just as important. Incorporating stretching into your workouts or regular daily routine can help improve your health just as much as exercise does.

Without strecthing, you can become more prone to poor posture or worse, injuries. Additionally, stretching your core muscle groups on a daily basis helps to increase blood flow to your muscles, which brings a greater nutrient supply to your muscles. By supplying your muscles with key vitamins and minerals, muscle soreness is reduced, recovery time is improved and joint injuries may heal more quickly. Who doesn't want that?

Aside from benefiting you physically, stretching is good for the mind. It helps in relaxing tense muscles and giving your body a break from any physical or mental stress you may be experiencing.

Below are a few key tips to stretching safely:

  • Focus on core muscle groups: arms, shoulders, back, neck, calves, thighs, hips.
  • Stretch both sides. For example, if you stretch your right hamstring, be sure the stretch the left.
  • Hold your stretch; don't bounce. Bouncing as you stretch can cause injury. Instead, hold each stretch in a smooth movement for 30-60 seconds.
  • Avoid pain while stretching. You should feel slight tension in your muscles as you stretch them, but if it becomes painful, back off to where it doesn't hurt.
  • Keep it up. Stretching can take a little bit of time, but to see maximum results, physically and mentally, try to stretch at least 2-3 times a week.
