At your first appointment, you were likely recommended to take nutritional supplements in addition to your hormones. This is because optimal nutrition is critical to hormone balance and successful hormone replacement therapy. 1. Magnesium is critical for the production of estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. It’s also involved in over 300 other enzymatic processes, including energy production, sleep hormones and relaxation. Men should take 400 mg of magnesium at bed time, and women can take 800 mg. 

2. Calcium plays a role in hormone secretion. That’s right. Not only is calcium important for bone strength, but it is also critical for hormones. Calcium also plays a significant role in being able to sleep through the night, so that tip to drink a glass of milk at bed time (try almond milk!) is a good one.

3. Iron is needed for chemical reactions that make amino acids, collagen, neurotransmitters and hormones. Taking too much iron, or the wrong kind, can actually bind hormones together so that they are not bioavailable, but taking the right form of iron can boost hormone production and energy.

4. Pantothenic Acid helps make hormones. All of the B vitamins are just amazing for general health and wellness. They are critical for energy and brain health. Vitamin B 5, or Pantothenic Acid, is particularly important for its role in steroidal hormone production which includes estrogen, testosterone and cortisol. For this reason it helps fight stress.

5. Vitamin D is called a vitamin, but it’s actually a hormone. It regulates calcium uptake into bones and activates the immune system. It also triggers a natural cancer-fighting function in our cells called apoptosis. This is programmed cell death. Basically, your body kills off cancerous cells if it knows they are there and has the vitamins it needs to defend itself. Vitamin D is also called the sunshine vitamin and gives you a similar mood boost just as when you go outside for a few minutes.

6. DIM, or Di-Indolyl-Methane, and is a nutrient your body creates when you eat broccoli, cauliflower or other cruciferous vegetables. DIM helps reduce dihydrotestosterone for men or women taking testosterone supplements. This helps prevent hair loss. For women, DIM can help balance estrogen levels which may protect against breast cancer. DIM also reduces breakouts and skin issues related to hormones.

If you do skip the vitamins, let your provider know, and be extra careful about what you eat. Eat as many bright colored fruits and vegetables as you can. Drink plenty of water.
