What is it?

Oil pulling, an ancient Ayurvedic remedy, has regained popularity recently as one of the best, most natural ways to detoxify your bloodstream and improve your oral health. Simply put, oil pulling is the act of swishing oil (usually coconut oil) around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes to remove toxins, and ultimately improving your health.

How does it work?

There are thousands of different types of bacteria in your mouth, some beneficial, others harmful. Here's how it works: as you begin swishing, first, the oil turns into a thin, white liquid as it mixes with saliva. Lipids within the oil begin to remove toxins from the saliva. As you swish, toxins continue to leach onto the oil, which is the discarded (via spitting), removing the toxins with the saliva. This process works by removing harmful bacteria from the mouth and reducing yeast and fungus overgrowth.

What's in it for me?

  • Oral health: Oil pulling rinses the mouth of harmful bacteria, such as fungus. Because of its ability to rid the mouth of bacteria, it may reduce the risk of cavities, gingivitis and bad breath. Additionally, it has been shown to strengthen the teeth, gums and jaw, aiding in the treatment of TMJ, bleeding and sensitive gums. (Some loyal fans swear that it whitens teeth, too!)
  • Lymphatic system: Your lymphatic system is your body's natural drainage system and is made up of a network of vessels and lymph nodes. The fluid that cleanses out your lymphatic system is known as "lymph". If the lymph is not run through the lymph system, it becomes backed up like a clogged drain and can cause your lymph nodes to become enlarged or infected. As harmful bacteria are removed through the oil pulling process, you provide a clean path for your lymph to pass through, which gives beneficial microflora a healthy environment to flourish in, improving the overall function of your lymphatic system.
  • Immune health: Oil pulling may help reduce sinus congestion and inflammation, thereby decreasing the allergy load in allergic individuals.

So what do I do?

  1. Place 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil into a small ramekin.
  2. Place the ramekin in a larger bowl with 1 inch of hot water, making a warm "bath" to help liquefy the oil. (Tip: we do not recommend microwaving the coconut oil as it can get too hot, too quick. Additionally, microwaving coconut oil burns off important nutrients and properties that coconut oil contains.)
  3. Once the oil is liquefied, swish it in your mouth for 15-20 minutes.
  4. After 15-20 minutes of swishing, discard oil in at trashcan and rinse your mouth with warm water.
  5. Follow oil pulling with brushing your teeth.
